Look for items with versatility that can be worn in a variety of ways and for different settings. The options are limitless, from sarongs and pareos, oversize button-ups, kaftans, mini skirts, mesh tanks, and more. “The majority of our cover-ups are designed to highlight your swimwear either through the silhouette itself or the fabric choice.” She suggests thinking of cover-ups as an accent to your swimsuit versus covering up your suit, keeping your swimwear the focus. “A great swimsuit cover-up is about the silhouette and fabric,” Kozerski Freeney says. Terry cloth is always a good one as well.” The best fabrics for cover-ups, according to Kozerski Freeney, are jersey, since it requires no ironing, nylon/spandex, due to its durability and ease, and polyester, since it is moisture resistant and easy to care for. “You want something that doesn’t take too long to dry either. “Mesh has great breathability, as do light cotton wovens,” LaPilusa recommends. “If you are coming off a hot day at the beach, you want something that won’t make you sweat.” She recommends leaning towards linens, crochet, or ultra-light cotton blends that keep you cool. “It’s important to pick fabrics that are light and breathable,” Hsu says.
